Equalization effect causes Audacity to crash

Help for Audacity 2.x.x on Mac OS X.

ImageThis forum is for Audacity 2.x.x on Mac OS X 10.4 and later.
Please state which version of OS X you are using, the exact three-section version of Audacity from Audacity > About Audacity and whether you obtained the .dmg installer or the zip.

Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

Thanks for the crash report. I appears that the Equalization effect is crashing when trying to load a curve by name (you can see that in lines 28 through 30 of thread 0 in the report).

We're going to delete some more files in Library / Application Support / audacity (the same place where you found the "EQCurve" and "EQBackup" files).

In that folder, trash pluginregistry.cfg and pluginsettings.cfg. Then open Audacity try applying Equalization to a short, simple track, for example 30 seconds of generated noise.

If Audacity still crashes, delete the audacity.cfg file from Library / Application Support / audacity, as well as pluginregistry.cfg and pluginsettings.cfg if they have re-appeared . You will lose your custom preferences settings but that's what happens when we do a "hard reset" on Audacity.

If neither of these help I will ask for help from our developers.

Bill,

I removed those two files, pluginregistry.cfg and plug insetting.cfg and launched Audacity. It asked if I wanted to restore the previous unsaved project and I said no. I attempted to apply the Equalization effect and it crashed.

I then removed all 3 .cfg files and tried again. I attempted to apply the Equalization effect and once again it crashed.

I deleted all 3 .cfg files once again and relaunched Audacity. I created a new waveform and was able to apply the Equalization effect/Telephone and a few others. I tried some other effects such as Tremble/Bass and Hi-Pass and all worked.

I was feeling pretty confident the issue was resolved until I quit Audacity and then relaunched and created another Project. I attempted to apply the Equalization effect and it crashed.

I tried a few more cycles of this and the results were sporadic, some times I was able to apply Equalization and other times Audacity would crash.

I was hoping you had the magic bullet there for awhile.

Proving the problem has nothing to do with Effect > Equalization.

Do you have and use Mac Cleaner, AVG Cleaner or one of the other tools in this group?

Solid State Drive or Spinning Metal?

Are you the only registered user?

Are you trying to edit over a network or use Network Connected Drives? Is iCloud anywhere in this project?

Do you do your system updates automatically, or manually?

If you use Time Machine, is it automatic or manual?

Forgot the important one. Do you have virus protection software?

I am a little confused as to why you say the crashes have nothing to do with Effect > Equalization. That is the only time Audacity crashes is when I go to apply this effect to the waveform.

To answer your questions:
I. I use AVG Cleaner
2. My drive is a spinner
3. My Mac does have two users
4. Computer is not on a network nor does any Audacity project reside on iCloud
5. I do system updates manually. As a matter of fact I am over do, I am still 10.10.5
6. I use Time Machine automatically. However, the Time Machine disk is not always connected to my mac due to lack of USB ports.
7. Currently I do not use anti-virus on my Mac. I intend to start using Norton but I have to upgrade my OS first. Yosemite is not supported in the current Norton Version.

Tony:
Congratulations, you have found a bug in Audacity 2.1.3.

I was finally able to reproduce this on my machine by doing this:
1) Select a named curve in the Equalization effect
2) Select a different named curve

Sorry, but the best I can recommend for now is to avoid the Equalization effect. We are working on the next version of Audacity (2.2.0) which should be out in a few weeks, and will have this bug squashed.

Thanks ;) for finding and reporting this bug!

Is this a posted bug? I mean before now?

Just Macs (as far as we know)?

To close the loop; add-on, external, or third party equalization curves don't crash, which is why audiobook and custom productions sail straight through.
