RECORDING FROM CASSETTE PLAYER TO MAC OS X 10.6.8

Downloaded Audacity 2x. OK. Got a connection white/red plugs into cassette player, other end being headphone plug into my computer. Seemed to record ok. but I realised it was recording from the built-in microphone. So quality poor. I went to system preferences and turned right down microphone. Tested again. No recording at all. So it is not recording through the lead. I bought a lead audio PLG 3.5 mm stereo 2PLG RCA. Why? Could it be the wrong lead? Thanks. Michele

The Headphones port on the computer is an output, not an input.

Does your Mac have an audio input? Look at the Mac’s Manual.

Thanks. It makes sense the headphone being an output. Yes, my Mac has an input which is an in-built internal microphone. So how can I change this to record directly through the lead?

Just at a look at my Mac OS X 10.6.8 and it is not fitted with an audio input on the side, whereas the old ones were. So it looks like I won’t be able to record using Audacity.

You can buy a USB interface to give you a line-in. Here are some recommended interfaces http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Recommended_sound_devices#USB_Interfaces .
