Automatic Pause at Bookmark?

Windows 10.
Haven’t yet installed Audacity.

Hi All,

Does Audacity have a feature that allows you to insert ‘bookmarks’ or ‘cue points’ into audio files and the playback automatically pauses at that point, until the spacebar or enter is pressed, when playback would continue?

I can’t see this in feature requests or FAQ.

Many thanks.

Martin

No, Audacity does not have that type of bookmark.
You can pause playback at any time by pressing the “P” key on your keyboard.
You can also make a time selection and playback will stop at the end of the selection.
Audacity also has “labels” (see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/label_tracks.html)
What are you wanting to do?

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your speedy and helpful response to my question.

To answer your question; I’m trying to pause playback at preselected points. If you’re asking why I want to do that, I’m trying to develop a prototype for a commercial product, so I’m sorry but I cannot reveal the detailed ‘why’ at this stage.

Should I be successful in developing the product I will, of course, observe all T&Cs of the Audacity terms of use and license (that would be the subject of another post, if/when I find the feature that I’m looking for).

All I really need is a very basic audio (or audio and video) editor with the pause feature that I describe. Given that the Audacity development community accept feature requests, and that my request seems (to a non-coder like myself) pretty simple, since the existing ‘label’ feature you pointed me toward seems only to require a ‘pause’ feature added to the label’s drop-down menu, could this be done using Audacity? If so, what would I need to do to make it happen?

If not, would you happen to know of any other a/v editor that has this kind of ‘pause’ feature?

Many thanks, again, for any assistance.

Martin

There is currently development work happening to give Audacity a “scripting interface” and “macro” commands. This should, at least partially, be available in the next Audacity release, Because it is “work in progress” I don’t have full details, but it sounds like you may be able to make a macro command that will select up to the next label and then play (and stop at the end of the selection). So the next version ‘may’ be able to do what you want.

There’s some information in the “alpha manual”, but note that this is all subject to change:
https://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Macros
https://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Scripting_Reference
https://alphamanual.audacityteam.org/man/Macros_Examples

Thank you again, Steve. Very helpful.

In order to keep informed of the next s/w release, which (of the several) mailing lists should I sign up to…?

Yours,

Martin

The release will be announced on Facebook, Twitter, and G+ (links at top of page). It will also be announced on this forum and the main website (https://www.audacityteam.org/).
