Distorted vocals When recording over instrumentals/any file

I’ve had audacity for years, but i cant seem to fix this problem.

When i record my voice by itself without an imported file, it sounds fine. But when i import a file and record on top of that, the vocals go in and out, sounds staticy, and sounds like there’s an interception.

i have a headphone adapter i usually use and i plug in my headphones a mic, and everything usually sounds perfect. Now if i chose the headset option it doesn’t even recognize my mic and doesn’t record a sound. I thought it was my computer, but it is not.

Please someone help. This software is my life.

Did you just recently update to Windows 10? If you have audio driver software on your machine, it has to be Windows 10 compliant to work. Older software may not.

import a file and record on top of that

Does that mean you are using Audacity Overdubbing? Put the backing track on track one and play that while you record track two?

Now if i chose the headset option it doesn’t even recognize my mic and doesn’t record a sound.

More and more like a Windows 10 update problem. “My sound device worked for years until I did the Windows 10 Update (or moved to a Win10 machine) and now it doesn’t work right.”

Yeah i overdub. This started before the update, then i looked up possible problems and i saw that there was an update, so i updated. But that did not fix anything. If audacity doesnt work, then i don’t know what i will do. This is the only good free recording software.

i will double check to see if i have windows 10.

When combining two tracks you may have to turn the gain-slider

down on each,
as when combined they could cause clipping-distortion, which sounds like cracky static.

Thank you very much. I will make sure i will try that.

that did not work unfortunately. But thank you for the quick respond. i guess i have to mourn this loss.
