Error opening sound device

After I record a recording and try to play it back, I get this error message.

“Error opening sound device. Try changing the audio host, playback device and the project sample rate.”

I cannot use the software.

Please help.

Thank you.

Look up in the Audacity banner for the little speaker icon. That’s where Audacity is trying to send the sound. Does it actually exist? My laptop is sending sound to the 'Built-In Output" which is the little speakers, and that works.

Sometimes, Windows will try to send sound to your USB microphone because Windows registers your microphone as a speaker.

My audacity is trying to send the sound to “Realtek high definition audio (SST).” Yes, it actually does exist.

I think I fixed the problem. I was using the wrong “audio host.” I changed it on the drop down menu at the far left.

From memory, now. Windows has two hosts and they each work half of the time.

Audacity on Windows has 3 hosts available.

See this page in the Audacity Manual:
