ImageThis forum is for Audacity 2.x.x on Windows.

  • Please state which version of Windows you are using, the exact three-section version of Audacity from Help > About Audacity and whether you obtained the .exe installer or the zip.

  • Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at http://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

Volume balance changes on start

Audacity changes my volume settings when it starts. Volume balance becomes 50% on each channel like default settings. Why? I have some other settings for my audioroom. I tried to change host interface, but it didn't help.

Why do you need unbalanced settings? Because you are farther from one speaker than another?

You did not say what version of Audacity you are using, but unfortunately It is an Audacity bug (or bug in the PortAudio audio I/O library we use) in recent Audacity versions. It is listed in the Audacity 2.1.3 Release Notes.

As it says there, it is possible that choosing Windows WASAPI host in Audacity's Device Toolbar may fix it. If not, you could go back to Audacity 2.0.2 https://code.google.com/p/audacity/downloads/detail?name=audacity-win-2.0.2.exe.

Alternatively there is another solution here http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=323703#p323703 to automate unbalancing the sound device after launching Audacity.

but then of course you lose the benefits of all the bug fixes, new features and improvements that have been made in the 5 years since 2.0.2 was released.

Checked, it doesn't work.

This is at least some solution, NirCmd is useful utility.

Actually, no. I work with electronic circuit boards and use the signal generator for each audio channel, so I can't just move a speaker closer to me. :)
By the way audacity also switching off linear input when it starts. I think it's the same problem.

You would have to write to their mailing list: http://www.portaudio.com/contacts.html.

Here is the report on our bug tracker: http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1321.
