I am editing an hour-long podcast (XFM with Ricky, Steve and Karl), and the bits where Karl talk are so low compared to the others. I want to be able to boost the volume where it is noticably lower, and raise that - without affecting the bits that already are loud (leave them be).
I thought Leveller might be the place to start. If I select it all, the loud bits gets lower in volume also, but you can hear a rather disgusting sound in that wasn’t there before, even if it was clipping in the original. Amplify is good but then I have to manually select the parts that need to be louder. Normalize seems to make all parts lower or louder, I might not be getting that one correctly.
Is there another way to “make all sound equal”, as it were, without having to do the manual job of raising all the bits?

The show is all talk, quality of the audio isn’t that important. The sound that came from the high parts when Leveller was used, though, was a bit too inconvinient.
I listened to Car Talk radio show on the actual radio for years and enjoyed it very much. The radio station started to mess with it, covering up some of the show with local work, so I went to the podcast.
Turns out the podcast doesn’t go through the broadcast limiters and compressors and so it’s almost unlistenable in the car. Turn it up, turn it down, turn it up, etc.
I use Chris’s Compressor set to compression about 0.77 and it creates a new show very similar to the well-behaved, “leveled out” one on the air.
I did install Chris’s Dynamic Compressor, but oddly enough it doesn’t appear in the Effect menu. But I found that the regular compressor works quite well.
