Does scarlett 18i20 work with Audacity

Hi! My name is Johan Martinsson. I’ve been trying to record drums in Cubase pro 8.5, but have been pulled back to square one all the time. I’ve been thinking about getting simple, like Audacity instead.
Does the Focusrite scarlett 18i20 work with Audacity? Thankful for answers.

have been pulled back to square one all the time.

What does that mean in different words?

Our latest generation 18-in, 20-out USB audio interface can handle just about anything your band or studio can throw at it

That’s scary. Audacity can manage multi-track recording, but it’s a little hit or miss depending on the device.

It doesn’t cost anything to try.

You should dig in the device information and find out if it supports Windows 10. It has to say that in those words. Windows 10 is a whole new system and many older devices and software packages stopped working.

If the word “ASIO” goes by, Audacity doesn’t easily support ASIO. So that will be full stop.

Hi Swedrummer93,

Information on using the 18i20 with Audacity can be found here:

https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/209778069-Using-Focusrite-Interfaces-with-Audacity-on-Windows-and-OS-X

In short, on Windows, for most drum recording applications it is not possible as you can only see the first two inputs in Audacity.

The article means that Audacity as shipped does not support ASIO on Windows. It is possible to compile Audacity with ASIO support, but you must not give that ASIO-enabled build to anyone else due to licensing restrictions.

Steinberg licensing is changing. It seems the latest ASIO version has 2 licenses: Commercial AND GPL. You might want to look into that.

I have done so, but drew a complete blank. The 2.3 ASIO SDK has a PDF licence application form to send to Steinberg. I see nothing about GPL.

The VST 3 SDK has a dual proprietary / GPL v2 licence: VST 3 SDK License - VST 3 SDK - Steinberg Forums.

Gale

You’re right, Gale. Sorry.

I got VST and ASIO confused. Now let’s hope ASIO might just follow VST licensing?
