Making it rain (in audio)

Would anyone have some direction on how to make it rain (in audio). I have a goal to create some reasonably (or better) realistic rain sounds. The easiest thing to do would be to utilize a sound effect and put it on a loop but I've been wondering can this be generated programmatically and still sound pretty realistic.

Thank you,

Particularly if its covered up with dialog and other theatrical stuff, fading in Generate > Noise: Pink should do it. If someone walks from inside to outside, switch from pink to white noise.

These are a cousin to microphone internal noises which I frequently refer to as "Spring rain in the trees."

It probably wouldn't work by itself, but if Marsha turns to John and says, "Oh look. It's starting to rain."

Yes, I can hear the rain now :)

Brownian noise. That is good info to follow up on.

I'm getting closer.

Thank you both very much,

There's a Nyquist plugin for Audacity called Random Amplitude modulation to vary the volume.

I think you'll need a similarly random highpass filter to make it sound realistic.

I can imagine how this would be beneficial. I will definitely look into this.

Thank you,
