Can't type a directory path in open dialog, can only click through a list of desktop icons: my wrist gets tired clicking through to 10 directories with different roots

File > Open has a search window on the upper right. If you know what the unique filename is, that may be all you need.

For technical reasons we can't yet use the full Windows open/save dialogue that has a type-in address bar. For the same reason, we can't show the Search box top right that Koz mentions.

Our older dialogue does support Places Bar on the left. It is possible to add up to five custom locations there - see http://www.howtogeek.com/97824/how-to-customize-the-file-opensave-dialog-box-in-windows/.

Did I stumble over a difference between the Mac and Windows version?

If you have a window open to the files, you can open them backwards. Right-click the file and Open With > Audacity. So you don't need to crank down the whole path each time.

We make our own dialogue for Export Multiple which should be consistent across platforms. We reuse what the operating system offers for the other open and save dialogues, and they are hard to adapt.
