Audacity K.O. after installing Rosegarden/ Qjackctl / Qsynth

Hi.
I've been using Audacity for months and it always worked well, but now that i installed the software i listed, i can't record audio from mic anymore.
(And i don't know what else i cannot do because i never tried to do anything with it but recording).

When i click on the Record button, i see a red vertical line, sometimes scrolling (but not recording), some other times still at the beginning of the track.
Then when i stop the recording, i get this warning:

<The latency correction setting determined that the recorded audio is hidden before the zero.
Audacity took the start back to zero.
You may need to use the Time Shift tool to move the track to the right position.>

(Probably my italian/english translation is not so accurate, but hope you understand what i'm talking about).

Can you guess what the hell i've done?

It would be an incredible coincidence if this turns out to be the same problem that I had last week.

Which Linux distro are you using?
Have you customised the sound system in any way?
Do you normally use Audacity with Jack, ALSA, Pulse, OSS, OSS4?

Is the problem only when you have Jack running?

I have Ubuntu 10.10.

Honestly I don't know what "customise" means.
This is everything i did to my system after installing Rosegarden:
- I installed Qsynth;
- I installed Qjackctl;
- I downloaded from Synaptic the packages i found on web guides (if you need to know the names, i'll check this out.. :S );
- I installed ZynAddSubFX too, but i already had this problem when i did;
- as soon as i managed to hear Rosegarden's sounds i started using it and just added one new soundfont to Qsynth;

I always used Rosegarden with Jack, and Audacity doesn't work, even if i turn off Jack o restart the computer..

I hope i told you everything and didn't say too many useless things.
I'm new to Rosegarden, to sequencers in general.. and to web forums too.. XD

If Jack is running, then you will need to set Audacity to use Jack.
"File menu > Preferences > Devices"
Set Host to "Jack" and set the Recording and Playback devices to "System".


Jack support is a bit flaky in Audacity 1.3.12 (which I'm guessing is the version you have), but it should work. (Jack works a lot better in Audacity 1.3.14, but that version hasn't been released yet).
Don't click on the recording meter in Audacity when you first start Audacity or Audacity will crash (see here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Linux_Issues#JACK )

I tried. Nothing.
I uninstalled Jack, and Rosegarden, and Qsynth too.
I uninstalled Audacity and i downloaded it again.
Doesn't work.

I always get the warning about latency correction.. wtf!!!

What exactly did you try and what exactly happened?

How do you have the mic connected to the computer? Is it a laptop's built-in mic? USB mic? A mic connected to the mic input of the sound card?

Make sure you have the right recording device selected in the Preferences -> Devices -> Recording device.
What have you selected as Host there?

Are you using PulseAudio? JACK?

Open the system's audio control panel, make sure the mic is selected as the recording device and that it's not muted.

Reinstalling audacity won't change anything. If you want to reset audacity's preferences you need to delete the config file in your home dir.
In your homedir there's an .audacity-data directory. Inside it there's an audacity.cfg file. Close Audacity if it's running. Delete the config file. Restart audacity.
