Mixer Toolbar selector greyed out on Windows Vista/7

This section is now closed.

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

This is historical information for Audacity 1.2.6 to 1.3.12 inclusive.
To resolve this issue, please download the latest Audacity 2.x .

From Audacity 1.2.6 to 1.3.12 inclusive, under Windows Vista and 7 the Audacity Mixer Toolbar drop-down selector is ALWAYS greyed out because Vista and 7 treat every input source as a separate recording device in its own right.

Please select your input sources such as line-in, microphone or stereo mix in the Audio I/O tab of Audacity Preferences. The Preferences are at the bottom of the Edit Menu (shortcut CTRL + P).

If you don't have the input you require in Preferences, or it doesn't work, exit Audacity, and try to enable and select the required input in the system mixer .
