Orphaned Blockfiles & Missing Audio Data Blockfiles

Postby Jeff Leites » Thu Dec 18, 2008 6:44 pm

What did I do wrong? I was doing a multi-track recording yesterday, and at one point, after doing an export, I closed and reopened the project. I got popup windows messages about Orphaned Blockfiles & Missing Audio Data Blockfiles. I took the first option in both, and I lost tracks :o (At least I got my exported files, but I can't go back and make impovements). I don't know what happened. The only unusual thing I did with this project is convert some stereo tracks to mono.

Since this is Windows, when was the last time you did a drive error check and Drefrag? Audacity will not capture live performances into a badly fragmented or full hard drive.

If you made your exports as WAV than you can go back to the WAV as exported by just re-importing into Audacity and thgen carry on editing.

Actually you can re-import compressed file formats like MP3 - but I wouldn't recommend it -as the compression damage will remain - and get worse if you subsequently export to a compressed format again.

I defraged about a week ago.

Yes, I can bring the wav file back in, but that is the stereo mix down, not the orginal multi-tracks.

Ah, yes that's more difficult. You would have needed to export each track as a separate WAV - there is no automated way to do that in Audacity at present.

The need for this has surfaced before - and Stevethefiddle posted a feature request item in the adding features to audacity section - see: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=7624 - you may wish to add your vote for it there.

I had the same problem after export to MP3 . Before it I close and open the project sometimes and no problems. I solved it by downgrade to 1.3.7 See: viewtopic.php?t=12045
