Can't hear my tracks thru USB Mic's headfone jack

Can't hear my tracks thru USB Mic's headfone jack

I just bought my new RODE PODCASTER MIC.
However, I am having one issue.
I've plugged it into my computer (Windows) and am using Audacity to record a podcast.
One track as music on it.
The other track is the RODE MIC that I'm inputting into Track 2.
I have my headfones plugged into the headfone jack on the RODE PODCASTER.
I hear myself fine. But when I record myself, I want to hear the music (the other track) in my headfones, and I'm not hearing it.
Likewise, when I play back the tracks, I can't hear anything (not my recorded vocal track, nor the music track) in my headfones (which again, are plugged into the RODE PODCASTER's headfone jack).
In SOUNDS on the CONTROL PANEL, I have the RODE as my default playback device.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there another setting I need to change to enable playback of other tracks THROUGH my headfones which are plugged into my RODE PODCASTER's headfone jack?
Thank you for any guidance.

Are you doing this as an overdubbing task?

Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > [X] Overdubbing (select)
Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Recording > [_] Playthrough (deselect)

That should play your existing tracks to you while you record new ones. You also need to set Recording Latency when you do this. That's covered in the Overdubbing tutorial.

Your microphone has to have the ability to do a talent mix for your headphones. Not all microphones will do that. This one does.

Thank you, Koz.

Ok, so now, when I playback my tracks - both vocal track and music track - i hear IN MY HEADFONES both tracks.
BUT... very strange... when I try to record a new vocal track and listen to the music track at the same time,I can ONLY hear the music track when I am speaking in the the headfones, the moment I take a break and am silent, the music doesn't play through my headfones.
Any ideas?

Audacity doesn't to anything in real time past some timer and chain jobs. So Something Else is doing this to "help you."

You should go into Windows Control Panels and turn off Windows Enhanced Services.

Then make sure there's nothing else running on the machine, particularly communications software like Skype or other conferencing software like that.

Make absolutely sure you're recording directly from your sound device and not one of the "fake" devices like Stereo-Mix or What-U-Hear.

Did the microphone make you install special driver and production software? Are there new production settings that could cause this?

I've never heard of this, so chances are this is local to your computer (unlikely) or rode in on special software (much more likely).

You're not using Audacity 2.0.3, are you?
