Bulk conversion of WAV to MP3

Can Audacity help me to do a bulk conversion of WAV files to MP3 files? If not, can anyone suggest suitable products (preferably free) that can do the job. I'm currently using v1.3.14 but have just downloaded and installed v2.0 RC1. The PC is a Windows 7 system.

My reason for asking? I've just changed cars and the new one has a USB port from which I can play MP3 files. Unfortunately, being someone who likes to hear good quality music played at a good sound quality, all my CD rips have been done to WAV. Now I have a need to get copies of all that ripped music in MP3 form.

Here's hoping...

I've never used "Chains," but the instructions seem to think it's possible.

Yes you can do it with Audacity using Chains, but it's probably quicker and easier to use a simple MP3 batch encoder such as LamedropXPd (first one on the list if you're using the 32 bit version of Windows. 2nd on the list if using the 64 bit version of Windows)

Just figured out another way to do it. I'm not sure if this will work for hundreds of files at once, but it just worked for me with four of them:

  • Drag all of (or a bunch of) your wav files into Audacity. It will create a new track for each one.
  • In the File menu, choose "Export multiple...", and have it "split files based on tracks".
  • It will let you choose metadata for each file, all at once.
  • Then it will do the conversions all at once, while you make a sandwich.
Done!
