Problems with save and with export

Help for all users of Audacity 1.2.x on OS X

OK, I found the audacity Preferences file:

John/Library/Preferences/audacity Preferences

and deleted that OK but still no joy.

And I've deleted both the prefs and Audacity and reinstalled Audacity, deleted the Prefs and restarted before relaunching Audacity.

I get the "what language do you want to use" dialogue so the prefs are indeed gone, but still the problem remains. Also had a look inside the prefs file and it doesn't look like it would have any info that would affect the file saving problem anyway (not that I know much about these things).

Still cannot find audacity.cfg

Had a look at the Wiki entry on Preferences, thanks for the link.

Am thinking maybe I should try out Audactiy 1.3. Anyone know what it is like re stability etc?

Any more thoughts anyone?

Using Intel based MacBook running 10.5.6 and Audacity 1.2.5

Cheers,
John

Hooray :D

Oh dear :(

There probably isn't one for 1.2.5

Generally pretty good, though I hear there are some Mac issues with the current beta version. Audacity 1.3.8 is the alpha version and it works great on Linux - it should be available as 1.3.8 beta very soon, alternatively, Koz may be able to recommend a nice and stable, slightly older, 1.3.x version for your Mac.

I use/have used 1.3.5 and 1.3.6 with reasonable success. We're going to stay away from Mac 1.3.7 and wait for 1.3.8.

Now that I want it, I can't find the earlier versions. I swear there was a link on the main download page.

Have a browse through this lot:
Code: Select all
http://sourceforge.net/search/index.php?group_id=6235&words=file_name%3A(%2Baudacity)&type_of_search=files&pmode=0&limit=50
(forum does not like the link, so you will need to copy and paste it into your browser)

As we are finding out, there are a number of different ways to save the preferences. If you've been at this for a while, you have older preferences saved as ...

/Users/koz/Library/Preferences/audacity Preferences

...or, for a refreshing change of pace, they may also appear...

/Users/koz/Library/Application Support/audacity/audacity.cfg

With this one, you can take out the whole audacity folder for a clean sweep.

If you have a later version, you may have portable settings...

/Applications/audacity/Portable Settings/audacity.cfg.

That one can appear almost anywhere on the machine because the idea is that, oddly enough, it's portable.

If you manage to kill all those off, then yes, your fresh, new Audacity version should ask you "English?" which is the Audacity version of First Birthday.

Thanks koz and stevethefiddle.

I've given up for now. I have taken to writing my file names in TextEdit and then copying them into the Export dialogue box. It's not as laborious as it sounds. Have also downloaded 1.3.6 and will have a look at that when I feel I can spare the time.

As I said in an earlier post I dumped the prefs, get the "English?" question but it doesn't help. I wonder if there is anybody else using and Intel MacBook and OS 10.5.6 who is not having this saving problem (or any version of OS 10.5).

Cheers,
John

<<<Intel MacBook and OS 10.5.6>>>

One of my test machines is an Intel DuoCore Mac Mini running Leopard--so it's a really close cousin to what you have. Most of my testing is opening and closing work and seeing if the right menu's arrive at the right times. That alone can take a lot of programming management because of some of the Mac oddities.

I'm not a programmer. I'm working with the Mac Development Team. I break it and they fix it. Fair warning, I created this "machine" for testing and it doesn't have anything else on it. Like maybe FireFox, MacJanitor and millions of versions of Audacity (one at a time) and nothing else.

I can try to duplicate your setup at home (where the machine is).

So, you load a sound file and try to export it as a WAV and the filename characters start launching the associated action keys in the program, right? Give me the exact step-by-step and keystrokes you used to duplicate the problem. I'm particularly interested if you have any other windows or tools open when this happens (and it happens to enough other people to make this a borderline bug--and I don't use that term lightly)

I'm going to use piano2.wav, a short sound file, for my testing--see if this does it to you.

Yup. That's what it does.

============================================
Mac Mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2G memory
Mac OS-X 10.5.6
piano2.wav 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 KHz.
http://www.kozco.com/tech/soundtests.html
===========================================

I downloaded a fresh 1.2.5 and installed it on my test Leopard system. I set a couple of preferences; 2-channel (Stereo), 48000, 16 bits, and I installed the Lame Library. I opened the piano2 file and it played fine.

I Exported As WAV and as a filename, started pressing keys at the left side of the keyboard. "werfdscvagt..." Audacity went nuts trying to follow me by executing as many action keystrokes (Hotkeys? Shortcuts?) as it could. I don't know if the appropriate ones executed or not.

I think it's officially a bug. Multiple people on different machines can get unintentional, evil behavior to happen at will.

Count me among that number. Reinstalled, trashed preferences, emptied trash -- same problem is happening.

Interestingly, it happens on my office Mac (with Leopard), but not my home Mac (with Tiger). I may have different versions of Audacity -- I'll have to check.

Don't bother. It's the combination of Leopard, Intel, and 1.2.5.

The official recommendation is use the latest version of 1.3.7.
