if you use audacity and audio hi jack pro and do not get any speaker output from audacity (monitoring recording) make sure in hijack that mute is not selected--if so you will get no speaker output in audacity

However, sometimes it's good to monitor on headphones so you can take them off. If you monitor local speakers, you can't ever change the volume because some capture programs burn the Mac boop boop boop volume effects into the show.

If you think about it far enough ahead of time you can turn that off, but I'm not in the habit of thinking that far ahead.

You can also do what I do on one of my machines and use an external amplifier and volume control so I don't have to disturb the capture or the machine at all.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. Are you hijacking the output of Audacity?
