Low input volume

This section is now closed.

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I'm using a soundmax card which works ok with wave, cd etc playback but When I try to record using line-in with audacity, I cannot get enough input e.g. barely a ripple in the db waveform. I have checked all cables, play/record levels etc and when I connect the same output lead from my cassette player to another pc running audacity, all is fine. Any ideas e.g wrong settings in audacity etc

You probably shouldn't be using Audacity 1.2
The current version of Audacity (recommended for modern computers) is Audacity 1.3.14 which is available here: http://audacityteam.org/download/
Alternatively, the new Audacity 2.0 is due out in a few days.
