Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

This is a typical problem of using the (very old) 1.2.x version of Audacity on a modern computer.
Try upgrading to Audacity 1.3.14 (you can get it here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ )

You don't need to uninstall Audacity 1.2 before downloading Audacity 1.3.14, though it can help to avoid "file association" issues if you uninstall Audacity 1.2 before installing Audacity 1.3.14.

If you're using Windows 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 7, go to this page: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
look for where it says:
Recommended Download

Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7: Audacity 1.3.14 installer (.exe file, 18.4 MB) - The latest version of the free Audacity audio editor, including help files. See further information about Windows 7 and Vista.

and click on the underlined link that says:
Audacity 1.3.14 installer (.exe file, 18.4 MB)

When it has downloaded, double click on the downloaded file to run the installer.
On Windows Vista or later you may be prompted to enter an administrator password during the installation.

I've just tried it and it downloaded fine.

Alternatively you could try this link: http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 2.0rc2.exe (direct link)
This is a slightly newer version of Audacity. It is the "release candidate" for Audacity 2.0.
The main difference between this version and the 1.3.14 version is that this will install over the top of Audacity 1.2.6, so no need to uninstall your old version first. It also contains a few bug fixes.

See here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ:Recording#olevel
You'll probably find it useful to have a glance through the other FAQ also http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ

This tutorial may be useful: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Tuto ... _Recording

Now that we have hopefully sorted out your initial problem, if you have further questions start a new topic in the Windows > Audacity 1.3.x part of the forum. (one question per topic makes the topics much easier to follow ;) )
