I have recorded successfully through my Logitech web cam previously.Tonight however i am getting a loud whistling through the speakers (Also shows on wave form)on pressing the record button. After stopping and starting play the whistling is heard again but my voice is also heard in the background. Any help appreciated.

Use headphones rather than speakers. Does that fix it?

Thank you Steve, by turning off the speakers the background noise reduced to a low hum (shown as a narrow constant diffused trace on the waveform). I shall try moving the mike (which is part of my webcam)to possibly improve it further.
It may be picking up sound from the computer fan or other vibration noise.
